There is a misconception that multi-tasking makes you more productive.

However, research shows that we are much more productive when we focus on one thing at a time. I ran across the video below from author and speaker Phil Cooke talking about Distractions and how one of the greatest sources of being unproductive is being distracted. I’ve known Phil for about 15 years through the National Religious Broadcaster’s convention and through other avenues. He has written a book on the topic called “One Big Thing” where he challenges readers to not be average at many things, but to be great at one big thing. I agree with him that most people fail, not because they are unqualified or incompetent, but because they are distracted.

Here are some tips that Phil gives in this video podcast on how to focus:

  1. Do some physical things that will block distractions that come your way.
  2. Use programs that will block Social Media from being a constant distraction.
  3. Come into work in the morning and do your biggest project first. Then check e-mail and do other things.

In the world of church media, during your work week, focus one thing at a time and do it well.
