A Step-by-Step Guide to Environmental Project
I’ll never forget when I stood in a room with environmental projection for the first time.
Ever since I was young, I dreamt of a space where art wasn’t just an accent, but it was the vehicle used to help point people toward their Creator. On that evening in 2009, my mind was opened up to the realization that virtual atmospheres and immersive projection was upon us as a generation. That night sparked a fire inside to help define and refine a perspective of media, arts and technology in the Local Church and I began a journey of research and investigation on the why and what of visual worship.

Fast forward to 2016. My journey still continues as I’ve seen the technology of environmental projection adopted by thousands of churches worldwide. Media and art is now commonplace in most contemporary churches, but there still seems to be a void. A conversation must begin as we ask deeper questions about the biblical approach of immersive visual environments and we utilize such powerful technology on a regular basis.
Enter my latest book, Environmental Projection: The Collision of Modern Technology and Sacred Spaces. Not only do I cover the technology that is involved in setting up Environmental Projection, but I go in detail to the philosophies and biblical principles of utilizing media in worship.
I wrote this book for a few reasons.
First, I wrote it to build a case for art, media and technology in the church.
Second, I wanted to point people in the right direction if they were to incorporate new ideas with projection into their weekly services.
Third, I wanted to give a very clear Christian perspective on immersive visuals and help see that this isn’t just for the sake of marketing or creating the “cool” effect.
Lastly, I wanted to pull the curtain back and help you realize that setting up environmental projection isn’t as complicated as it may first appear.
As you read Environmental Projection, you’ll learn about DLP and LCD projection, keystone, masking and many other key technological details behind the medium. My hope is that you become an expert and clarify the role you play in crafting powerful visual environments in worship. You are not a spacebar monkey, you are a curator of powerful stories and the Holy Spirit will use your gifts, talents and abilities as a vehicle for your community to connect with their Heavenly Father.
